Haven Theatre's production of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" comes to Theater Wit.

Hot weather brings a few icy-cold confrontations to the Chicago stage this week.

Slowgirl

A teen fleeing her mistakes, a reclusive uncle who takes her in, the isolation of the Costa Rican jungle — Steppenwolf’s newest production sounds like the most bizarre family reunion we’ve never heard of. And we can’t wait. The show runs through Sunday, August 25.

Steppenwolf Theatre, 1650 N. Halsted, 312-335-1650 or online.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Combine rock ‘n roll, a couple dramatic monologues, some stand-up and — what the heck — throw in a deeply affecting transgendered musician, and you’ve got the stage version of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” Trust us, there’s a reason it’s a cult classic. The show runs through Sunday, August 11.

Haven Theatre Company at Theater Wit, 1229 W. Belmont, 773-975-8150 or online.

The Quality of Life

The Den Theatre’s newest show is a study of how two very different couples react to love, loss and opposing political ideologies. If you catch one show at Theater on the Lake this year, this is it. The show runs Wednesday, July 24 through Sunday, July 28.

The Den Theatre at Theater on the Lake, 2401 N. Lake Shore Drive, 312-742-7994 or online.
