A crumbling marriage on display in The Last Five Years.

A hefty dose of drama (and melodrama) takes the stage this week in Chicago theater.

The Last Five Years

Jason Robert Brown’s award-winning musical deconstructs a failed marriage and the intersection of professional success and personal sacrifice. In an interesting set-up, the husband tells his story starting with their first date, and the wife starts her tale beginning with their divorce. Gripping stuff. The show runs through Sunday, Aug. 25.

Kokandy Productions at Theater Wit, 1229 W. Belmont, 773-975-8150 or online.

Invasion!

In Jonas Hassen Khemiri’s searing dark comedy, language is a manipulative tool and xenophobia is on full display. And this sort of distorting, politically charged, fully engaging theater is what Silk Road Rising does best. The show runs through Sunday, Sept. 1.

Silk Road Rising at the Chicago Temple, 77 W. Washington St., 312-857-1234 or online.

Rocky Horror Show

We know you’ve seen the movie, but do yourself a favor and watch the stage version of Rocky Horror. Trust us, transvestites and the Time Warp lend themselves pretty well to the stage. Just leave the toast at home. The show runs through Thursday, Aug. 8 through Sunday, Aug. 11.

Stage Door Fine Arts at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont, 773-327-5252 or online.
