Robert Aldrich's 1972 film Ulzana's Raid wasn't the first revisionist Western but it was certainly one of the better ones. Screenwriter Alan Sharp created characters who are barely hanging on to life and society in the Old West, as opposed to the defined good and bad guys of John Ford Westerns. Burt Lancaster stars as a grizzled Army scout under the command of an inexperienced officer (Bruce Davison) charged with finding a group of Apaches who brutally raided Arizona settlements. The heroes here don't act altruistically and Aldrich's direction of Sharp's script draws parallels to the Vietnam War.

Ulzana's Raid screens 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Patio Theater (6008 W. Irving Park Rd.) as part of the Northwest Chicago Film Society's summer film schedule. Admission is $5.
