Help Find Read/Write Library's Stolen Book Bike

By Chuck Sudo in Arts & Entertainment on Aug 26, 2013 6:30PM

Read/Write Library’s “Bibliotreka” book bike (formerly known as the Chicago Book Bike) has had its share of problems over the years, notably when the Park District shut it down in 2010 because owner Gabriel Levinson was handing out free books without a permit.

Levinson moved to Austin, Texas last year and agreed to loan it long-term to Read/Write Library after chatting with Amanda Meeks, the group’s outreach coordinator. Read/Write Library gave the Book Bike a tuneup and new paint job and it’s made appearances at city festivals and neighborhood events all summer, including the weekly events at Comfort Station.

The book bike was stolen in Logan Square over the weekend and people are being asked to be on the lookout for it. It’s “a Haley trikes custom made bike and it’s teal and white,” so it can’t be hard to find unless someone’s some ice cream bar stickers to it and is now using it to sell treats. If anyone has information as to the bike’s whereabouts, contact Read/Write Library.
