Here’s something you don’t see every day: a small plane was forced to make an emergency landing on Lake Shore Drive early Sunday morning.

The incident occurred around sunrise. The pilot of the single Rand S6, John Pedersen, said he was experiencing a mechanical issue from his tail control shortly after lifting off in Schaumburg and was forced to make the landing near Jackson. Pedersen watched for a traffic gap on the drive before making his safe landing. Chicago Fire Department crews later moved the plane off the road.

Pedersen told the Tribune his landing was “a blessing” and that "there's no way I could have got it to Midway or O'Hare."
