A third suspect is in custody in New Jersey in connection with the grisly murder and dismemberment in May of a man on the Southwest Side. The suspect, Milton Miranda, is believed to be the boyfriend of Daisy Gutierrez, who was charged Sunday with the murder of 28-year-old Jose Reyes.

Gutierrez is alleged to have lured Reyes, who had expressed feelings for her and was the brother of her ex-boyfriend, to her home on the 8300 block of South Scottsdale. Once Reyes was there, Gutierrez is believed to have undressed in front of him before Miranda burst into the room, allegedly attacked Reyes with a pipe and knife, slit his throat and cut off his head. Gutierrez then ostensibly called her father Salvador, said she “fixed the problem” and the two watched as Miranda dismembered Reyes. Salvador Guitierrez is believed to have helped Miranda bury the remains in the backyard.

Daisy Gutierrez, now pregnant, fled with Miranda to New Jersey. She was arrested Friday in the Oak lawn restaurant where her father works, is charged with first-degree murder and is being held on $2 million bond. Salvador Guitierrez is being held on $500,000 bond and charged with concealing a homicide. Prosecutors said both have confessed to their crimes.

The supposed boyfriend, Milton Miranda, is being held in Morris County Jail on a warrant issued from Chicago and is awaiting extradition. Police Supt. Garry McCarthy praised investigators for the latest break in the case.

“The detective had this case as a missing person’s case, and he was very relentless in figuring out what happened to this young man,” McCarthy said. “We got some information that we were able to follow up, which is what led us to the residence and the location where the body was subsequently found.”
