What is understood does not need to be discussed. Now that we have it out of the way that it’s bone-chilling cold out there here’s what you can do to provide yourself with some relief throughout the day.

As we mentioned in this morning’s weather post CTA and Metra are running with delays. Every train line in CTA’s system is experiencing significant delays. (Service on the Purple Line has resumed.) Metra is also experiencing delays with service on the South Shore canceled today, mechanical problems on the Metra Electric Line and delays elsewhere. If you're relying on CTA or Metra to commute today, check their respective websites and CTA's bus and train tracker apps for updated travel information.

As of post time 350 flights have been canceled at O'Hare International Airport and another 80 were scrapped at Midway. If you are flying out today, check with your airline carrier for any updates or delays.

Traffic is predictably crappy as of post time. ABC 7 has a handy interactive map of what's happening on area expressways. Our friend The Expired Meter has tips for drivers surviving cold winter weather. And driving in Northwest Indiana is currently verboten.

Please, please, please check on the elderly and infirm and keep this list of the city's warming shelters handy. The warming center at 10 S. Kedzie will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Transportation to a warming shelter for the elderly or disabled can be provided by calling 311. Chicago Public Library locations and Park District facilities will also be open and can be used as warming shelters during normal business hours.
