Why Wait Until Summer For A Block Party When You Can Have One Now?

The Empty Bottle's Music Frozen Dancing: A Winter Block Party went on Saturday despite freezing temperatures and snow. The outdoor stage next to the venue was well covered but you could still tell the band's weren't exactly all warm and cozy. The crowd dealt with the elements through the use of chili, chili dogs, coffee, cider and beer. We noticed a few people sneaked in their own "medicinal liquids" to help fight the chill. And folks could duck inside the club itself to dance to an unexpectedly good and surprisingly varied DJ set by Rabble Rabble when they needed to warm up a little.

The most remarkable thing about the event wasn't the cold, though, it was how little the cold had an effect on the proceedings. Marnie Stern, Diarrhea Planet and Heavy Times proved the show must go on no matter what. Diarrhea Planet in particular kicked out a rousing set, ending the show with one of the group's guitarist surfing over the crowd while still ripping out the riffs. It was a great image to prove that as long as you just roll with whatever is thrown at you, good times are sure to be had. Kudos to the Empty Bottle, considering how short the summer street party season feels it's nice to see them set a stake in the ground and move the beginning of that season ever earlier!
