Folks participating in Sunday's Polar Plunge weren't the only ones having fun in bitter cold for a good cause. Over 1,100 people braved the snowfall and cold temperatures to run this year's ninth annual Chiditarod on Saturday through Bucktown, Wicker Park and West Town.

This year's event set some new records. As of post time, over 20,000 pounds of food was collected for the Greater Chicago Food Depository, Chiditarod’s food beneficiary for the past several years. Participants also raised more than $36,000 benefiting the Chiditarod Foundation and the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Race founder Devin Breen said “The levels of creativity, participation, and generosity exhibited by our teams increase every year. It warms my heart to see so many people doing so much for our neighbors in need while having a total blast in the process.”
