Everyone is clearly tired of winter and starting to fight back against the oppressive cold. Like how Empty Bottle threw caution to the snowy wind and hosted an outdoor block party last week. If you want to continue this spirit of seasonal defiance, another hallmark of summer is opening up this weekend for you to enjoy. Hell, if the temperature creeps over 40, which it barely might, we say break out the shorts!

The Original Rainbow Cone, a Southside favorite and tradition, reopens for their 2014 summer season tomorrow but celebrates a grand re-opening noon this Saturday, March 8. To celebrate, the first 100 customers through the line will receive a 88th anniversary shirt. Original Rainbow Cone was founded in 1926 by Joseph and Katherine Sapp and was purchased in the 80s by their granddaughter Lynn, who has expanded Rainbow’s business to participating in summer events like the Taste, Lollapalooza and some local neighborhood festivals.

If you aren’t familiar with the delicious treat, it’s a sliced ice cream cone that stacks five flavors: chocolate, strawberry, Palmer house, pistachio and orange sherbet. It’s a refreshing fruity and creamy treat, the perfect cone during summer festival season. Or in this case the perfect cone to consume while daydreaming of summer festival season.

Head down this weekend and enjoy a Chicago original. At least this way you know you’ll be able to finish your cone before it melts, enjoy that perk while we still have it!

Original Rainbow Cone is located at 9233 S. Western Ave.
