When Illinois leads a list, it is rarely a ranking to celebrate. But on the green building front, our facades are helping Illinois save face.

According to new data, the Land of Lincoln has the most LEED certified space per capita of any state in the Union.

Chicago has long led the way in green building circles, embracing the US Green Business Council’s increasingly ubiquitous standards for buildings that utilize energy and water more efficiently.

But the new designation signals that the rest of Illinois is following Chicago's lead:

“It’s not something that’s just happening in Chicago. It’s happening all over the state,” said Brian Imus, executive director of the councils Illinois chapter. “So some of the buildings that were certified as LEED - the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie, the Caterpillar Visitors Center in Peoria.”

Further, a spate of high profile new green building projects have arrived and or in the pipeline.

And ongoing efforts from the City will keep us competitive in this area for years to come.
