The Memorial Day holiday proved to be a sad one for fans of the popular nightclub SPIN. One of the staples of Boystown nightlife, SPIN management announced on its Facebook page Monday that it was closing effective immediately.

"We would like to thank all of our customers for their support these many years and wish everyone a Happy Memorial Day! Stay tuned for what happens next..."

ChicagoPride.com confirmed the news, adding the club is under new ownership and plans to re-open in time for Pride weekend. News of SPIN’s closing isn’t surprising. DNAInfo Chicago reported in February owner David Gassman was looking to get out of the nightclub game and put the building housing SPIN on the market with an asking price of $1.5 million—a price he’s sure to fetch in a neighborhood full of hot properties. Even if Gassman can’t get that asking price, the leasing price for the 9,000 square foot space is $26,000 per month, which in Boystown should be easy to reach if the drag revues, dance parties and shower shows SPIN was famous for are part of the new nightclub venture.

News of SPIN’s closing had fans in a reflective mood on social media. Shane Kalminski, aka Shanté DéTroit, said SPIN was “our Cheers, our Lobo, Chubbie's Famous and The Max all rolled into one.”
