Hosted by Andrew Huff and Eden Robins of Gapers Block, the reading kicked off with a rather perverse, attention grabbing reading by Ted Goeglein that bordered on a porno gone terribly wrong. Compelling in his tone and fluidity, Goeglein brought a rare honesty to his work that allowed listeners to identify with his twisted sense of morality. After Goeglin’s boisterous effusion of expletives, the narrative that Claire Zuckley, founder of Zulkey.com, read was hard pressed to shock the audience, though it was still captivating and intriguing.
Patricia Skalka, author of Death Stalks Door County, revved the shock factor back up with her enthralling narrative style. Her intent description and almost symphonic voice, made me rethink the entire genre of murder mystery novels with a greater sense of respect. Sarah Ross Witt, Skalka’s perfect contrast, took a more laid back and leisurely tone with the audience.
The show closed with Ted McLelland’s piece on Vivian Maier, the hat lady turned posthumously renowned photographer, and his real-life encounters with her. Ted received some spirited backlash when he started to bash Roger’s Park citizens, though it was all in good jest, since McLelland is a RP resident himself.
A monthly occurrence, this high spirited and welcoming event is worth the time of anyone looking to immerse herself in Chicago’s rich literary culture. Tuesday Funk’s next episode will be held Tuesday, July 1, at 7:30 p.m.
