A Construction Barge Sank On The Chicago River This Morning

By Chuck Sudo in News on Jul 10, 2014 6:05PM

A construction barge being used for work on the downtown Riverwalk project was consigned to the murky depths of the waterway this morning as it slowly sank near the LaSalle Street Bridge.

The barge from Walsh Construction was completely submerged by 11 a.m. and salvage divers were on the scene. It’s unclear as of post time why the barge sank. Transportation Department spokesman Pete Scales told the Tribune it will not affect any other traffic along the river, which should be good news for water taxis and Wendella Boat cruises.

By the way, you can watch the progress of the Riverwalk construction or any possible future barge sinkings via live video feeds provided by the city.
