Our Candy Crushes: Mayana's Space Bar

By Melissa McEwen in Food on Sep 10, 2014 6:00PM

Have you ever had a nostalgic yearning for a food you cherished in childhood that you haven’t had in a long time? I had that happen recently for a Snickers bar, once one of my favorite candies. But when I indulged my craving I found the candy much less grandly delicious than it was in my memory. Maybe it’s because I’m larger now, and the Snickers was more gigantic in a 10-year-old girl’s hands. Thankfully I found a candy bar that is like a childhood craving adapted for adult sizes and inclinations- Mayana’s Space Bar.

It’s an objectively gigantic slab of chewy vanilla nougat with crunchy nuts covered in silky sea salt caramel and then dipped in dark chocolate. The dark chocolate is covered in beautiful green and white designs. Sometimes I think it would make a good gift, but I can’t imagine one lasting long in my apartment. It’s just too tempting. And now that I’m no longer 10 years old, I can pair it with a good red wine.

I buy my Space Bars at Green Grocer (1402 W. Grand Ave.), but you can find them at Urban Orchard (5212 N. Clark St.), Provenance (2312 W. Leland Ave.) and Southport Grocery (3552 N. Southport Ave.). You can also order them online.

Our Candy Crushes is a series focused on the most delicious of locally made candy.
