Morning Box Score: Beat(ing) Goes On For Cubs, White Sox
By Chuck Sudo on Sep 15, 2014 2:50PM
Minnesota 6, White Sox 4
The headline at Whitesox.com this morning reads the team is all but out of playoff contention, but fans of the club have known that for weeks. Hector Noesi earned his "L" with 6-2/3 innings of five-run ball. Noesi struck out three, walked two and allowed eight hits in that span. The silver lining Sunday was Jose Abreu's ninth inning home run, which gave him 35 for the season and tied him with Ron Kittle for the club record for home runs by a rookie. Abreu had two RBi.
Pittsburgh 7, Cubs 3
Before we look at the lowlights of the Cubs loss Sunday, let's take a look at the sweet triple play the Bucs turned.
An around-the-horn triple play is a beauty to watch and that one, the first by Pittsburgh since 2009, sparked a rally against starter Jacob Turner, who allowed seven runs over 4-1/3 innings. Pirate starter Edinson Volquez, meanwhile, settled down after some early struggles to throw seven innings, allowing three runs (one earned).
