Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won the 2014 Bank of America Chicago Marathon Sunday with a time of 2 hours, 4 minutes, 11 seconds. Although it wasn't a course record, it was the third fastest time in the event's history and marked Kipchoge's first major marathon win. Kipchoge pulled away from countryman Sammy Kitwara at mile 24 to win the race and lead a Kenyan sweep. Kitwara finished with a time of 2:04:28 and Dickson Chumba was right behind at 2:04:32. In the women's race, Rita Jeptoo won her second consecutive marathon with a time of 2 hours, 24 minutes, 36 seconds.
Blackhawks 6, Buffalo 2
As has been customary in their ascent to becoming Chicago's dominant professional sports franchise, the Blackhawks walked a red carpet into the United Center Saturday night to launch their home season. Then they changed from suits to hockey gear and allowed the Sabres to hang with them on the ice for the first 40 minutes of play. In the third period, Patrick Kane put Chicago ahead for keeps with a sweet goal, assisted by linemates Brandon Saad and Andrew Shaw. Marian Hossa followed with a short-handed goal, Patrick Sharp scored a power play goal and Daniel Carcillo ended the scoring with a tally of his own to pace the Hawks to victory. Shaw and Duncan Keith scored first period goals to give Chicago an early 2-0 lead, but Buffalo responded with a goal by Zemgus Girgensons and a short-handed goal by Tyler Ennis. Corey Crawford had 21 saves and the Blackhawks had a commanding 47-23 advantage in shots on goal, including a 19-4 advantage in the final 20 minutes of play.
