Englewood's First Ever 5K Encourages Runners To 'Ditch the Weight & Guns' Nov. 2

By Jon Graef in News on Oct 18, 2014 7:00PM

The 'Ditch the Weight & Guns' Englewood 5K walk and run at Ogden Park, the South Side neighborhood's first ever organized run, aims to promote nutrition, fitness, and nonviolence throughout the greater Englewood community.

Proceeds from the race go to the Harper High School Football Team and nonprofit Forever Moving Forward, which helps empower African-American girls aged 7-18 from Chicago's impoverished neighborhoods. [Harper High, if you recall, was the focus of a two-part episode of This American Life]

The run takes place Nov. 2, and online registration is open until Oct. 31st. Registration costs $20. You can watch Ariana Taylor and Andrea Natay talk about the 5K on Fox 32 below:

Natay, a Harper High alum, owner of Forever Fitness Chicago, and personal trainer who helped organize the run, told DNAinfo up to 900 people could participate in the event.
