Morning Box Score: Toews Lifts Hawks In OT; ND Squanders Chance At Win

By Chuck Sudo in News on Oct 19, 2014 3:45PM

Blackhawks 2, Nashville 1
Few things are as exciting in hockey as a shorthanded breakaway goal in overtime. Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews has one of those magical moments at the United Center Saturday night and it catapulted the Hawks to an overtime win against the Central Division rival Predators.

Toews' game-winner highlighted what was a solid goaltenders duel between Corey Crawford and Nashville's Carter Hutton. Crawford stopped 19 of 20 shots while Hutton stopped 35 of the 37 shots he faced. The Blackhawks continued their atrocious play with a man advantage. Hutton turned away all of the Hawks' seven power play opportunities. Johnny Oduya scored a first period goal for the Blackhawks while Shea Weber tallied a power play goal for Nashville.

Florida State 31, Notre Dame 27
In a game many in the media were calling "Catholics vs. Convicts II" (a reference to the storied Notre Dame-Miami matchups of the late 80s and early 90s) the Irish needed to play a perfect game in order to defeat the second-ranked Seminoles in Tallahassee Saturday night. They merely played a near-perfect game. A pass interference call on what would have been the winning touchdown drive by the Irish allowed Florida State to extend its winning streak to 23 games. Notre Dame won the statistical battle except the final score. They had 26 first downs to Florida State's 18, outgained the Seminoles on offense 470 yards to 323, while Irish QB Everett Golson passed for 313 yards and three touchdowns to Florida State's Jameis Winston's 273 yards and two touchdowns.

In other college football scores, Northern Illinois defeated Miami (Ohio) 51-41 while Nebraska ran over Northwestern 38-17.
