Video: Wrigley Renovations In Progress

Last week the Cubs began in earnest their long-stalled renovations of Wrigley Field by tearing down the bleachers in order to rebuild them and move the outfield walls back 15 feet along Sheffield Avenue and 16 feet along Waveland.
It’s a historic demolition. Those bleachers were first erected in 1937 and for decades were the haven for the unemployed, people playing hooky from school or work, and other Cubs fans looking for cheap tickets to a game and the ability to enjoy a couple beers in the midday sun. Today, the Wrigley Field bleachers are big business: tickets to the bleachers are among the priciest and highly sought after. The Jumbotrons and other signage the Ricketts family plans to erect around them after the bleachers are rebuilt are a linchpin in the ballclub’s $575 million renovation plan. The Rickettses are going to put up those signs, even with the threat of a lawsuit from the rooftop clubs that surround the ballpark.
For now, enjoy these videos of the bleachers being torn down and imagine all that construction equipment as dinosaurs attacking the Friendly Confines for over 100 years of futility.
