This week, two emotionally charged plays are up against a Christmas-themed musical created by and starring, um, Dee Snider.

Tamer of Horses
A New York City gang member takes refuge in the barn of a prep-school lit teacher in William Mastrosimone's play, which calls into question the role of an educator in the lives of streetwise, seemingly unreachable youths. The show runs through Sunday, Dec. 14.

Teatro Vista at Victory Gardens’ Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln Ave., 773-871-3000 or online.

Dee Snider’s Rock ‘N Roll Christmas Tale
If you’ve somehow missed the fact that Dee Snider is putting on a Christmas-themed rock ‘n roll musical in Chicago, starring himself, then you might be the only one. Regardless, we’re ready to see the former Twisted Sister frontman deck the halls, so to speak. The show runs through Sunday, Jan. 4.

Broadway in Chicago at Broadway Playhouse, 175 E. Chestnut, 312-977-1700 or online.

Strandline
Irish playwright Abbie Spallen’s mythical drama centers on a reticent Irish woman mourning the death of her husband, and the resulting aftermath within her tight-knit town. The show runs through Sunday, Dec. 7.

A Red Orchid Theatre, 1531 N. Wells St., 312-943-8722 or online.
