This week on the Chicago stage, you’ll find a seminal Christmas production, an off-Loop, pre-Broadway tryout and a classic folk opera.

The Humans
Catch playwright Stephen Karam’s tale about a family's Thanksgiving dinner set in the daughter’s eerie, New York City duplex, before the show heads to Broadway next season in collaboration with the Roundabout Theatre Company. The show runs through Sunday, Dec. 21.

American Theater Co., 1909 W. Byron St., 773-409-4125 or online.

A Christmas Carol
It’s hard to believe that it’s time for the Goodman’s seasonal stalwart. Just accept it and settle in to watch the indefatigable Larry Yando in his eighth turn as Ebenezer Scrooge. The show runs Saturday, Nov. 15 through Sunday, Dec. 28.

Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn, 312-443-3800 or online.

Porgy and Bess
The classic Gershwin opera about a physically disabled beggar who falls in love with a gangster’s girlfriend encompasses several heavy themes, from racial tension to substance abuse. The show runs Monday, Nov. 17 through Saturday, Nov. 20.

Lyric Opera of Chicago, 20 N. Wacker Dr., 312-332-2244 or online.
