Imagine what life was like in 1905. Now compare that to what life is like in the present day, in this new year. Now imagine someone who saw both of those years.
Chicago's Ruth Adler is such a person.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Adler is set to become the world's 78th validated supercentenarian—which is to say, she'll turn 110 years old on Jan. 11, one week from tomorrow. The Tribune's Barbara Brotman spoke to Adler on the heels of her historic birthday, and was able to glean a fascinating biography.
Adler, who lives on the North Side, grew up on the city's South Side, then, later in life, started a market research firm and hired women, some of whom were, according to Brotman, "in rough financial straits." As for why Adler has lived so long, she has no idea. One expert in longevity with whom Brotman spoke simply said that supercentenarians "won the genetic lottery at birth."
So chow down on them burgers and hope for the best, I guess. At any rate, many happy returns to Ms. Adler from Chicagoist. Here's to another 110 more?
