Afropunk started out in the mid 2000’s as a documentary that examined the relationship between punk and people of color. As its existence spread through word of mouth, it found favor amongst alienated black youth who didn’t quite fit into archetypical standards of black masculinity and/or femininity.

Those who, like me, were in high school at the time surrounded by 50 Cent pretenders and called “white” for being into bands such as My Chemical Romance but considered “too black” to hang out at Hot Topic found the Afropunk documentary to be a godsend. Afropunk provided a sense of community that was desperately needed, and that community has only grown stronger over the past decade as the idea has transformed into a movement and nationwide traveling festival.

After an absence of several years, Afropunk returns to Chicago on June 4 for a show featuring Hannibal Buress, Danny Brown and Holt. We previewed Holt’s re-debut not too long ago and our friends at Do312 are into his new direction. The show will also feature art by street artist turned painter Hebru Brantley.

This is a 21+ show, and you have to RSVP to get in. The location has not been revealed yet and will only be disclosed to those that RSVP. Check out the flyer below for all the info.
