Marina City Tower On Track To Become Chicago Landmark

The iconic twin towers of Marina City in River North are expected to be giving preliminary landmark status this week by Chicago's Commission on Landmarks.

The commission will meet Thursday to determine the skyscrapers' status as a local architectural landmark, as DNAinfo reported.

Marina City was built in the '60s by architect Bertrand Goldberg, a stark departure from other buildings on Chicago's skyline. To achieve landmark status, the Department of Planning and Development says a building must evince "exemplary architecture" from "a significant architect."

Marina City has long been a symbol of Chicago's Riverfront, but gained new fame after Daredevil tightrope-walker Nik Wallenda crossed the Chicago River from a tightrope attached to a Marina City tower on one side, and later walked blindfolded between the two Marina City towers.
