High Waves, Swim Advisory On Lake Michigan Expected Tuesday And Wednesday

Surf's up on Lake Michigan from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday, according to weather projections, but you might want to avoid the water and beaches until they pass.

The National Weather Service has issued a swim advisory due to high waves along the lakefront from 4 p.m. Tuesday through Wednesday morning in Illinois and Northwest Indiana, according to CBS2. Forecasters are referring to the weather as a "swim-risk" due to winds up to 30 miles per hour and potentially life-threatening currents and waves up to 5 feet high.

The Chicago Park District has not issued a swim ban as of Tuesday morning, but if that changes would-be swimmers can check the Park District's beach website or look for red flags placed on the beaches when a swim ban is in effect. As of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday about half of Chicago's 26 open beaches were under swim advisories, meaning park district officials advised caution due to poor water quality. Rain, high winds and inclement weather can all have a temporary negative effect on water quality at the city's beaches, which are tested for bacteria throughout the summer.
