Police have vowed to find the person who dismembered a toddler and dumped the body parts in the Garfield Park lagoon.
Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy told the police force to do whatever it takes human resource-wise, equipment-wise and technology-wise to solve the mystery, CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.
“Luckily we’re the second-largest police department in the country-13,000 police officers,” he said. We can dispatch hundreds at a time. There’s over 100 police officers, detectives, divers working this case 24 hours a day."
A foot was spotted floating in the lagoon on Saturday afternoon, authorities were alerted and searches uncovered the other foot, two hands and the toddler's head. A sketch artist is currently working on a drawing to help identify the toddler, who was probably in the lagoon for more than a week. (Update: here's the sketch.)
Authorities started draining the lagoon on Tuesday and it had receded by about seven feet on Wednesday afternoon, the Sun-Times reported.
The divers are working in 24-hour shifts and since there’s no way to see under the water, even with sophisticated sonar equipment, they are picking up every item in the water on their hands and knees.
Once the lagoon search is completed, authorities hope to put the pieces of the puzzle together and identify the toddler, his or her parents and find out why he or she was dismembered and left in the lagoon.
