The plastic cups still scattered on downtown streets and the swarms of CTA riders decked out in running gear can only mean one thing—the 2015 Chicago Marathon has swept through the city for another year.

About 45,000 people, many of them from around the U.S. and the world, ran the 26.2 mile course Sunday morning. The course threaded through 29 Chicago neighborhoods from downtown Grant Park to Wrigleyville on the North Side and Pilsen on the South Side.

Dickson Chumba, of Kenya, took first place with a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and about 25 seconds. Kenyans Sammy Kitwara and Sammy Ndhungu took second and third place, respectively. Florence Kiplagat, also of Kenya, won the women's race in about 2 hours and 23 minutes.

Tatyana McFadden won the marathon's women's wheelchair race for the sixth time, and Australian Kurt Fearnley won the men's wheelchair division for the fifth time.

Whether you were among the hundreds of thousands who cheered for the runners bright and early Sunday morning, or you're just waking up to the aftermath now, here are some of our favorite photos from the inspiring event.
