Kyle Schwarber's powerful home run that landed on top of the video board at the Cubs' Tuesday night game against the Cardinals has been encased in plexiglass. It's also set on a little pedestal where it will stay until the end of the Cubs' postseason run.
The Cubs verified that the ball was indeed Schwarber's—it has the markings of a postseason ball. Around 2:15 p.m. yesterday, Cubs went to work protecting the ball from the elements until they figure out what to do with it next. Schwarber will likely get first dibs on the ball, but the Cubs have pondered sending out the ball on a "Stanley Cup-type tour" so fans can take selfies, the Tribune says.
MLB won't give this mythic ball its official seal of authenticity, according to Michael Posner, head of the league’s authentication program. The problem is authenticators left Tuesday night before they knew the ball was on top of the video board. He said, "If there’s any shadow of a doubt, if there’s any loss in the chain of custody, (we can’t 100 percent guarantee it). We’re not disputing the authenticity of an item. We’re just saying these are the guidelines we have to maintain a working and reputable program. It’s not that I don’t trust the Cubs. It’s probably more than very likely that that’s the ball up there."
