This female seal pup was born on Jan. 2, making her the Brookfield Zoo’s first birth of the year. She is so cute that I screamed out loud in my apartment, alone and at length!

“At birth, the pup weighed just over 30 pounds, and she will triple or quadruple her weight in the next month,” the Brookfield Zoo announced in a charming Facebook post. The prodigious growth is a result of seal mothers’ milk, which is “very rich.”

The pup’s mother is an 11-year-old Brookfield seal, Lily, who had the pup with a 12-year-old “sire,” as the Chicago Zoological Society puts it, named Boone.

Congratulations to the parents, even though they likely do not read Chicagoist!

However, don’t expect to see the pup (or Lily) right away. “The two will remain behind the scenes for several weeks to allow them time to bond,” the zoo’s Facebook post said.
