A woman was shot in the head and killed while stopped at a red light in Edgewater early Monday morning.

The woman, 21, was driving with a male passenger who the Tribune reports was her boyfriend. At 12:57 a.m., she stopped at a red light in the 5900 block of North Ridge Avenue, police said.

A man got out of a nearby grey sedan and opened fire, shooting her in the head. She was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in critical condition, and was later declared dead.

Ridge Ave. is a major four-lane thoroughfare; the block where the woman was shot has with shops on one side and a park on the other.

An Edgewater resident who heard the shooting, Tracey Alcoser, told ABC7 it was the first violent incident she'd seen in the area since 2005. "It's a nice area, really friendly," she said. "Dog-friendly and everything."

No suspects are in custody yet, and Area North detectives are investigating.
