A teenager has been accused of attempting to shoot someone at Oak Street Beach Monday evening.
Maurio Young, 18, of suburban South Holland, was arguing with a 22-year-old man at the beach Monday evening when he allegedly pointed the gun at the man's face and pulled the trigger, police told Chicagoist. But the gun didn't fire, despite having live rounds.
Police officers who saw the altercation interviewed the victim, who identified Young, and then arrested Young shortly after 9 p.m. During a patdown police found A .25-caliber Beretta in Young's pocket, and Young was charged with one felony count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and one felony count of possession a firearm without a valid firearm owner's identification card, according to police.
Young was arraigned on his charges at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse Tuesday and ordered held on a $75,000 bail, the Tribune reports.
Summer violence has been an increasing concern for local law enforcement, with the city facing higher shooting rates than it has seen in years. The Chicago Police Department has been deploying more officers to patrol the beaches, according to the Tribune, and the department plans to send a "summer mobile patrol unit" of bike cops and other officers on foot, horses, Segways and ATVs to patrol parks and beaches this year.
