It's summertime in Chicago, and we're gearing up for everything that entails: festivals, cookouts… ice skating? Yep, apparently ice skating, too. Navy Pier today unveils Skate by the Lake, a temporary, partially enclosed rink in the new Polk Bros. Park.

"We are excited to offer Navy Pier guests the unique opportunity to skate in Chicago's warm summer breezes," said Marilynn Gardner, President and Chief Executive Officer for Navy Pier, Inc., in a press release. "It is both thrilling and fitting to offer this memorable experience in Polk Bros Park, whose namesake family built a summer rink for Chicagoans to enjoy more than half a century ago," she added, referencing a summer skating rink built at Polk City back in 1953.

As anyone who's watched this year's Stanley Cup Final (or anyone with a basic understanding of physics) can attest, the summer months can be pretty unforgiving to ice rinks. So if/when the weather gets nasty, lets hope things go better for Skate By Lake than they did when inclement weather hit Navy Pier’s most recent grand gesture, the Centennial Ferris Wheel.

The rink is open daily from noon until 10 p.m. Tickets are $15 with skate rental, $10 BYO skates. Potential first-weekend visitors, keep in mind Navy Pier also hosts Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series through Sunday, one of several events that could make the area, um, less than easily navigable.
