A local distillery is teaming up with one of indie rock's most altered-consciousness-friendly acts for a new rye whiskey.

Evanston-based FEW Spirits announced on Wednesday a collaboration with neo-psychedelic legends the Flaming Lips called Brainville Rye Whiskey.

The 80-proof whiskey will be crafted from rye, corn and malted barley grown within 150 miles of FEW, then aged in charred oak barrels custom-made in Minnesota. The mash is fermented with French wine yeast, which lend fruit notes and a hint of spice.

"Whiskey... it's such a volatile drink. Upon pouring a drink It's like accepting that you may become a werewolf ... And really... Who doesn't want to become a werewolf ??? Ha..." said Flaming Lips lead singer/space cadet Wayne Coyne, in a press release.

The Flaming Lips strike us much more as the psychoactive types rather than hard booze guys. But we'll play along. The label-art design, by Justin Helton of Status Serigraph, certainly is appropriately colorful and swirly in the preferred "hallucinatory" fashion.

Brainville Rye will be hit key FEW Spirits markets this October. Suggested retail price is $124.99 for a 750ml bottle.

As previously reported, the Lips will be in Chicago on September 16 as part of the annual punk-favoring Riot Festival & Carnival, in Douglas Park.
