The Crosstown Classic is under way, and White Sox and Cubs fans are once again feeling the North-vs.-South baseball rivalry. But the opposing factions will always have a few commonalities, like the city itself and relative underperformance (sorry, Sox fans, but two championships in 99 years isn’t exactly racking up the hardware either).
The fans apparently have another tie that binds, a pretty incredible one: semi-obscure Simpsons references! It looks like Sox and Cubs fans alike are in on the show's classic "BORT" joke.
For those unaware, “BORT” refers to a passing gag in the “Itchy & Scratchy Land” episode, which aired way back in 1994. Like so many Simpsons jokes, it developed a life of its own. (Slate looked at the increasingly widespread phenomenon of IRL “BORT” plates in 2014.)
