If you're willing to trade in being crushed against an L-car full of sweaty strangers to being squished against a backseat full of pleasantly air-conditioned strangers, this might be your week. UberPool will be offering $3.12 rides in the 312 area code all week, making an Uber ride pretty comparable to your daily CTA journey, as Time Out points out. But rides must stick north of 71st Street, south of Irving Park and east of Western to get the deal, which we're not thrilled about.

And of course, scoring the discount does mean you'd have to put up with some of UberPool's more irritating qualities—namely, having to wait around while your driver picks up other riders and the pressure to make small talk with the aforementioned strangers. Those are just a few of the downsides DePaul researchers cited in a study released in June comparing ride-hailing services with public transit, but all in all the study suggested even without the discount, something like UberPool might be a better bet, time and cost-wise than the train or bus. Plus, you might luck out and land the most honest Uber driver ever.

The $3.12 promotion runs through 10 p.m. Friday.
