Drivers Beware: Winter Overnight Parking Ban Starts Early Thursday Morning

By Stephen Gossett in News on Nov 30, 2016 7:05PM

Owning a car in Chicago is a great convenience—when it isn’t a huge pain in the ass, that is. (Good luck getting your emissions tests done in less than two hours, for example.) Now, one of winter’s annual contributions to vehicular headaches is just about here. Take note: the winter overnight parking ban starts early Thursday morning.

If you drive, you’re probably already familiar with the drill, but here goes: The ban, which covers some 100-plus miles of major, arterial streets, prohibits parking in those designated areas between 3 to 7 am. The idea, of course, is that the space is clear should snow removal crews need to clear the roadway. But remember, the ban is still enforced regardless of whether or not there’s snow on the ground. So don’t try to contest a potential ticket on grounds of “sunny day.” Violators are subject to fines and towing costs up to $150, with daily storage fees if your vehicle is towed. The ban is enforced until April 1.

So what streets are off limits? The city’s best available map looks like it was colored in with red crayon, but it’s actually a pretty good guideline, at least. Study up!
