Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will meet with President elect Donald Trump this morning, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune.
Trump, who has been busy “draining the swamp” in Washington by filling his inner circle with Wall Street friendly moguls and others who donated heavily to his campaign while criss-crossing the country on his victory “thank you tour,” will meet with the Emanuel “when he is in New York for a series of other meetings,” according to mayoral spokesman Adam Collins.
“When they spoke a few weeks ago the president-elect asked for a meeting with the mayor, as he has done with others who have significant experience in the White House and several other big city mayors,” Collins said in a statement to the Tribune.
The meeting comes after Emanuel, who once received a $50,000 donation to his mayoral campaign from the carnival barker President elect, had a phone conversation with him last week.
While the call between the two was reportedly “cordial,” Emanuel and Trump have tacitly butted heads in recent weeks, mostly by proxy. Trump, who has rarely spent any time in a Chicago neighborhood outside of the Loop, has frequently painted the city as a violent, lawless dystopia. Meanwhile, Emanuel has vowed to keep Chicago a sanctuary city for undocumented immigrants, a favorite target of Trump’s xenophobic rhetoric, who last month said he would block federal dollars for sanctuary cities. Emanuel also just announced the creation of a task force to help immigrants with their legal and mental health needs with Sen. Dick Durbin and Congressman Luis Gutierrez.
