In the wake of a shooting between an off-duty cop and a car of people in Albany Park Sunday evening, two men have been charged with attempted murder.

The people in a car driving on North Kedzie Avenue got into a verbal altercation with a group of people walking nearby around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, including the off-duty sergeant. Someone in the car allegedly fired at the group with the sergeant, and he returned fire, shooting one of them in the head.

Fernando Brieto-Solano, 22, and Juan Ramirez, 26, were two of the men in the car, and Brieto-Solano has been identified as the person who shot at the officer and his group. Brieto-Solano was hit in the shoulder, according to the Tribune, though previous reports said he was shot in the head. Police investigators determined he was responsible for the shooting after he admitted himself to the emergency room at Swedish Covenant Hospital later that evening.

Police say Ramirez, who is also charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, hid the gun near the hospital. The pair are due to be arraigned in court Tuesday afternoon on the charge of attempted murder and other charges.
