The Chicago Skyway heading to Indiana was shut down early Wednesday after a man and a woman were found fatally shot near an expressway tollbooth.

Police say the shooting, heard around 4:10 a.m. in the 8800 block of the southbound expressway, appeared to be a murder-suicide. The woman was found with several gunshot wounds and the man was found with a gunshot wound to the head.

A spokesman for the Chicago Skyway Concession Co. which manages the tollway, told the Tribune that the two people were in their car before the shooting. After they drove through the 87th Street toll gate, the woman got out of the car and the man followed her wielding a gun, and shot her. The car crashed near the site of the shooting. Then police who were stationed near the gate approached the man, who shot himself.

The Skyway lanes could be closed until 11 a.m.
