A Driver Hit 2 Triathlon Cyclists On Lake Shore Drive After Driving Around Cones

A driver was citied by police on Sunday morning after she struck two cyclists who were competing in the Chicago Triathlon on Lake Shore Drive. The driver hit the cyclists after she drove around cones that separated vehicular traffic from the Triathlon on the Drive.

The driver, a 20-year-old woman, went around the cones and struck the cyclists in the 3700 block of North Lake Shore Drive at around 7:26 a.m., police said.

One victim, a 38-year-old man, sustained shoulder and head injuries. The second victim, a 28-year-old woman, injured her head, neck and shoulder. Both cyclists were taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where there conditions stabilized, according to police.

The driver was cited for negligent driving and operating a vehicle without insurance, She refused medical attention, police said.

The Chicago Triathlon posted a statement on Sunday morning confirming the crash. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured athletes and their families. We’d also like to thank the numerous participants who pulled up their races in order to aid the athletes in need," the statement reads.
