The College Of Surgeons Is Selling 2 Gold Coast Mansions By Lakefront For $22M

The International Museum Of Surgical Science and its neighboring Gold Coast mansion are up for sale. The historic mansions represent two of the few remaining, early 20th-century homes facing Lake Shore Drive—meaning they have rare, unobstructed views of Lake Michigan.

The International College of Surgeons has apparently tried and failed in 2015 to sell one of the mansions, at 1516 N. Lake Shore Drive, according to Curbed. Now, they are trying to sell that house and its neighbor, the International Museum of Surgical Science, at 1524 N. Lake Shore Drive, for $22 million together.

The first home, at 1516 N. Lake Shore Drive, was built in 1916 and contains 12,000 square feet of living space. The second building is home to one of the only museums of surgical science in the world. Both boast marble floors, wood panels and other historic architectural details, and include two coach houses as well. The first was designed by renowned architect Howard Van Doren Shaw.

Of course, the museum collection is not included in the sale—those historic items will be moved to a new location for the museum once the mansions are sold.
