Good Read: A Kink in the CampaignA few weeks back, Joe mentioned the race in the state's 40th District, pairing incumbent State Rep. Deb Mell (a.k.a. Blago's sister-in-law) against Joe Laiacona, an openly gay candidate who, among other things, writes a leather fetish column. In this week's Chicago Reader - out today - our pal and former Chicagoist political writer Hunter Clauss writes an excellent in-depth profile of Laiacona, including his side-projects, the campaign, and the petition challenge against Mell. Check it out here.
Tracking Terkel?Gapers Block points us in the direction of this story, showing that famed Chicago writer Studs Terkel was tracked by the FBI for most of his life under suspicion of being a Communist. You can check out all 99 pages here [PDF].

Today In "The City That (Sorta) Works": 42 TicketsOne car has managed to collect 42 tickets while it sits untouched and unmoved on the West Side. In spite of collecting the tickets and tow orders for over two months, the car never budged. CBS2 tries to figure out why.

Helping Out McPierWe mentioned earlier today that the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority is in debt but we didn't offer any solutions. Fortunately, WBEZ's Justin Kaufmann put his thinking cap on and came up with a few ideas that might help out. Our one caveat: we like Shakespeare, Justin. Don't mess with the lit nerds.
Dollars For Milk DudsLooking for a way to get rid of that leftover Halloween candy that's just going to put on some pounds? The Tribune has a story today on Jeffrey Grimley, one of several local dentists who are offering cash - $1 per pound - in exchange for Halloween candy. And where does the candy go? For Grimley, it's sent to a California-based group Operation Gratitude who in turn ship the candy to troops stationed overseas. You can find even more dentists participating in similar buybacks at this website.
