Chicagoist Podcast 11/16 - The "Chicago Current" Edition

The Chicagoist Podcast Series soldiers into mid-November with another media-centric conversation. Whether it seems like it or not, Chicago is awash with local sources of news, information, and entertainment, and while teeth continue to gnash over whether the Zells and Tyrees of this market will save us from media blackouts, some people are jamming their shoulders to the grindstone and pushing forward however the hell they can.

Chicagoist Podcast 11/9 - The Windy City Rollers are Nationals Bound

Greetings, citizens of the Chicagoist Podcast Nation. The Chicagoist Podcast Series returns clad in elbow pads, helmets and spandex, prepared for the verbal assault that's about to take place.

ESPN's Sports Guy Pays A Visit

Ah, Bill Simmons aka ESPN's The Sports Guy. To know him is to either love him or hate him. To those that love him, his constant pop-culture riffs and irreverent takes on today's athletes make him seem like one of us: a fan. To those that would rather see him deleted from ESPN's archives, he's a Boston sports homer whose schtick has long since worn thin. Us? We love the guy. While his writing occasionally comes across as just a tad too jokey (sometimes undermining some good points), we can dismiss his homerism - at least he's honest and upfront about it - he's producing an entertaining podcast, he's doesn't suffer for a lack of passion, and he definitely knows sports, particularly basketball.

Chicagoist Podcast 10/19 - "A Serious Man's" Amy Landecker

Hot on the heels of last week's star-studded podcast, we follow it up this week with a bit more of a localish-celebrity angle. (No, not Billy Dec.) Amy Landecker is in the new Coen Brothers movie "A Serious Man" and you may also recognize her from her memorable turn as drunken-wife Petra Colson on Mad Men. But for many Chicagoans, she'll always be the daughter of legendary radio personality John Records Landecker.

Chicagoist Podcast 10/12 - Two Michaels and a John (Waters)

This week in the Chicagoist Podcast Series, a more star-studded podcast has ne'er been seen within the hallowed digital halls of our RSS Feed.

Chicagoist Podcast 10/5 - Neo-Futurists & New Blood for Hell's Kitchen

As autumn continues to shove its way into our collective hearts, the Chicagoist Podcast Series takes to the broadcast day to discuss living, loving, and performing around our fair city. This week:

The Moth Lands In Chicago

We've fallen in love with The Moth and its regular podcast -- discovered through its being featured on This American Life a few times -- and are excited to see they're kicking off a regular StorySLAM in Chicago, beginning with tonight's event at Martyr's.

Chicagoist Podcast 9/28 - The Horror!

On this week's entry to the Chicagoist Podcast Series, we go back to the No Games Chicago folks and see what's transpired since we last spoke back in March. You'll recall that Tom Tresser joined us to discuss their efforts and their rally, and we find ourselves doing the same thing this week - but much, much closer to zero-hour. How did they get face time with the IOC? How did they get Olympic Committee eyes on anti-bid information in Switzerland? We'll find out. [Ed's Note: We reached out to Chicago 2016 early last week to get one of their reps to keep things "Fair & Balanced." Granted, most of their crew is now in Copenhagen, but we've yet to hear anything back from them. If you're still up for it, Chicago 2016, so are we! - M.G.]

INTERVIEW: Kevin Smith Part I

Kevin Smith may just well be the most accessible guy in Hollywood. He' has been active online talking one-on-one with fans since the mid-'90s, puts out a free weekly podcast for his fans, recently embarked on a 24-hour Twittathon where he answered any question submitted to him (no matter how personal), and tours the country answering fans' questions face-to-face for marathon stretches of time. Oh yeah, and between all this he manages to turn out some pretty great films too. He'll forever be known as the fiscally conscious indie bad boy who created Clerks, but we would argue his entire oeuvre is well worth your consideration. Smith is in town tonight for a live appearance, one of his legendary "An Evening With Kevin Smith Q&As," and he was kind enough to sit down with us and chat ahead of time. This is the first of a two part interview.

Chicagoist Podcast 9/8 - Lebowski, Liquor Taxes, and our Gary Trip Recap

A Tuesday podcast for you this week - we get to take the holiday off just like the next guy but we're back to work just like everyone else today. (But we're simply giddy about sneaking out early to go see O!) In this podcast, Christine from Lynfred Winery helps us hash through the consequences of the new excise tax on alcohol in Illinois, Lauri Apple takes us through Gary one more time as we recap the process of getting those stellar photos from last week's set of posts, and Red Hot Annie of Vaudezilla tells us about the fallout from Saturday's Lebowski-themed "Rollin' Outta Here Naked" show.

Here's what we've been wasting our time reading this week. You should, too:

Mike Gebert's latest Sky Full of Bacon video podcast continues his look into fishing and sustainability by turning his camera to Great Lakes whitefish. With some assistance from Carl Galvan of Supreme Lobster, Gebert went on a fishing run with a Wisconsin family that has been trolling Lake Michigan for whitefish for 130 years.

Chicagoist Podcast 8/29 - Live from New York, It's Hannibal Buress

Just a few short days ago, Hannibal Buress got the news that he had been hired as a writer for the new season of Saturday Night Live. Just a few short hours ago, he found a few minutes to speak with the Chicagoist Podcast - probably in between counting his lucky stars and shrieking with glee.

Chicagoist Podcast 8/24 - Braaaaaaaaaaiiiiins

You may say that it's still a bit too early to be talking about things like zombies and other horror-related subjects. (You might have said something similar when we sat down with the Horrorbles folks back in March.) You might posit that we're not even out of summer yet and people are already rushing to get to Halloween. We offer these three examples to prove that it is absolutely not too early to start thinking about ghoulies and ghosties and things that go bump in the night: Halloween candy is starting to populate the shelves, Oriental Trading is starting its holiday advertising blitz, and Chicagoist hashed out a number of Zombie Hideouts last week.

Chicagoist Podcast 8/3 - Mindy Segal & Taste Of The Nation

If you were thinking you could get through August's events by hitting the Air & Water Show and Lollapalooza and then you'd be done, you're wrong. If you haven't heard of the Share Our Strength / Taste of the Nation events, well, you're about to. Mindy Segal is one of the co-chairs of the program and when she's not running her restaurant Hot Chocolate she's been crazy busy setting up one of the most interesting and promising culinary events of the year.

Sometimes, we here at Chicagoist get emails. Oh, we get emails all right, and every now and then, one of them piques our interests to the point where we'd like to know more. When one of those emails crosses our inbox with the perfect storm of plagarism, white supremacy, IP address tracking and Wheaton College, well, we thought we'd like to find out what was behind all of this.

Chicagoist Podcast July 21 - Stephanie Izard

Hot on the heels of Stephanie Izard announcing the first dinner in her Wandering Goat Dinner Series (she actually tweeted about it just after getting off the phone with us here at the Podcast Series), we got in touch with Chicago's Top Chef herself to discuss it.

Chicagoist Podcast 7/20 - Wherefore Art Thou, Fields and Sears?

After a weekend of watching music's future at Pitchfork (and remember when we talked to P4k's Chris Kaskie about the festival back in March?) , this week's entry to the Chicagoist Podcast series takes a bit of a look backwards.

Chicagoist Podcast 7/13 - Eating Everything with Patrick Bertoletti

After a short summer vacation, the Chicagoist Podcast is back - did you miss us? In our absence, the food world saw its Superbowl event on the 4th of July, the hot-dog eatching contest at Nathans in New York. Patrick Bertoletti is a professional competitive eater and took 3rd in the event this year, but holds world records for devouring everything from pizza to PB&Js and is currently ranked #2 in the world. That's a long way from all-you-can-eat wing night.

Steve Dahl will once again be available to the masses for public consumption. Starting September 8, Dahl will be available in podcast form via the JACK website, his own website, or iTunes. Rod Zimmerman, senior vice president and market manager for CBS Radio Chicago, issued a statement, saying, "In the months since Dahl has been off the air, we've heard from listeners across the country who miss his daily commentary and one-of-a-kind insight. We're excited to move forward with this partnership satisfying legions of Dahl fans while at the same time creating an entirely new opportunity for CBS Radio and digital marketers to work with the original founding father of talk radio." Dahl was pulled off JACK FM back in December.

Chicagoist Podcast: Summer Vacation

It's summer vacation time here at the Chicagoist offices and our own podcast is not immune to such schedule changes. Over the next two weeks, there will be no Chicagoist Podcast as we take a summer hiatus, but we'll return in mid-July with a whole host of new material and podcasts. As always, keep the email suggestions for future podcast topics coming in at Karl (at) Chicagoist (dot) com and catch up on some of the podcasts you may have missed, including:

Chicagoist Podcast 4/22 - Chicago's Guardian Angels

Another Monday afternoon means it's time for another entry into the Chicagoist Podcast Series! This week in the Podcast, in response to the flurry of conversation about the Guardian Angels posts, we decided that hearing from an actual Angel could be somewhat illuminating. After all the discussion about vigilantism, about assaults, about what kind of training goes on and whether or not anyone's actually seen a Guardian Angel, we thought we'd try to get some answers from the guy in charge.

Chicagoist Podcast 6/15 - Alphonse & Amber Benson

This week in the Chicagoist Podcast Series, we cover the distant past and the sci-fi future. From discoveries regarding bootleggers to conversations regarding Buffy. From Capones to comics. The alliteration possibilities are nearly endless but the content remains the same high level of excellence that you've come to know and expect from our legion of producers and editors.

Al Capone: Dubuque's Favorite Tourist?

If you consider Galena the end of the line in terms of western Illinois tourism, the Julien Inn of Dubuque, IA would like to get you to cross the mighty Mississippi for a Chicago-centric connection. Last week we had the "Capone was photographed here" news (which we'll expand on in next week's podcast). This week, NBCChicago brings us the "Capone slept here" story. (Which isn't really anything terribly new, but it's probably easier to get people with expendable income to drive to Dubuque than to stay in Cicero.)

Chicagoist Podcast 6/8 - A Panel on News & A Prom for Geeks

In this week's entry to the Chicagoist Podcast Series, we once again attempt to save the ass of journalism, or at least help out in our own small little way. Also, anyone that spent their prom night home soldering electronics, playing role-playing games or poking at their orthodontic headgear: the Chicago Geek Prom could be for you, and we'll tell you all about it.

Chicagoist Podcast 6/1 - Media & Marijuana

Welcome to June, everyone! What better way to ease your way into the summer months than with another entry to the Chicagoist Podcast Series! Even after a stellar night at the Whistler, we sobered up enough to put together a podcast. Next year I'll remember to get some drunken voicemails to plug into the 'cast. This week, we're spanning the Chicago area and coming up with conversations about saving journalism and providing joints to the diseased.

Chicago's long-time favorite late-Saturday-night horror host, Svengoolie, can add another honor to his resume. This year's "Rondo" awards, short for the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards, created by the Classic Horror Film Boards, chose to award Sven the title of "Favorite Horror Host." Sven beat out a full field of competitors like Penny Dreadful, host of Shilling Shockers in New England and Dr. Gangrene, host of Chiller Cinema in Nashville to take the honor.

In Case You Missed It...

We hope everyone enjoyed their long holiday weekend. While you were grilling, we were still working, so here are some of the things you might have missed.

Chicagoist Podcast 5/25 - Skepticism and Self-Discovery of Sorts

In this week's entry to the Chicagoist Podcast Series, after wishing a safe and healthy observation of Memorial Day to you all, we're managing to do a whole podcast without any coverage of food or beer. On this weekend, there's a good chance you've got that taken care of on your own with no problem.

Chicagoist Podcast 5/18 - Boxing, Biking, And Breasts

It might seem to some like excessive navelgazing when we chit-chat amongst ourselves in the Chicagoist Podcast Series, but sometimes it's because there's more to the story behind the photographs and posts. For example: Haven't you been just a little bit curious about what went into our coverage of the Golden Gloves Boxing competition and the So You Think You Can Strip competition?
