In lieu of our regular Wine Wednesday post, we found it much more fitting to focus on the colossal eating and drinking occasion that is the Super Bowl. Unfortunately for Chicago, we can't say 'we almost made it' or even whisper a word of smack talking to our buddies, but we will find a way to chest-bump and guzzle booze with the best of them. Here are some of the drinks and eats the Chicagoist Staff plan to indulge in...and some are just indulging in drinking (guess, Monday will be a slow one at Chicagoist).
Eat and Drink This: Super Bowl Sunday
Chicagoist's "Beer of the Week:" Abita Andygator
From the time the monks of St. Francis of Paula brewed the first doppelbocks in Bavaria, it's been a custom for breweries to end the names of their "liquid bread" in "-ator." Abita named their Helles Doppelbock, Andygator, a "creature of the swamp." Unlike many doppelbocks, Andygator is brewed to have a dry finish and emphasize a balance between hops, a pleasant light citrus flavor and bready yeasts. It pairs well with hearty sandwiches, like a blue cheese-crusted burger we made last week at home. Andygator should also pair well with anything cajun-related, blackened and fried. It's also a wonderful departure from the everyday Abita releases.
Chicagoist's "Beer of the Week:" Abita Purple Haze Wheat Ale
The Abita Brewing Company in Abita Springs, Louisiana makes some fine brews. With the recent run of good weather, we needed something to wash down the catfish po'boy we had at Dixie Kitchen the other day, as well.
