Many people in the area know A Christmas Story was originally based on author Jean Shephard's experience of growing up in Hammond. Sadly, it appears a one Hammond fourth-grader hasn't seen the movie or just didn't heed its warning. He should have known better than to try to lick a pole in this kind of weather, but he did anyway. In the end, he was fine except for his bleeding tongue.

Break out the pink bunny suits and leggy lamps! The classic holiday movie A Christmas Story turns 25 this year, and the film's home turf of Hammond is celebrating like gangbusters. The movie, based on a short story by Hammond native Jean Shepherd, centers on the author's hometown holiday experience in fictional Hohman, Indiana, a name chosen as a nod to one of Hammond's main downtown streets.
