Alan Keyes Is Still At It

Say what you will about Alan Keyes, if nothing else, the man is determined. 4 years after getting his ass handed to him by Barack Obama in the race for Senate, Keyes is still on the attack. It's a bombastic, overblown, hyper-exaggerated attack, of course, and he concludes by sounding like the craziest internet commentor that ever did exist. more ›

Pat Robertson Sues Blago

Pat Robertson Sues Blago

Chicagoist nearly sprayed our coffee all over the living room this morning when we heard on the news that televangelist and former presidential candidate Pat Robertson is suing Governor Blagojevich. We were hoping the paler version of Alan Keyes would stay out of our state. And we’re surprised he has time to get involved here when he is so busy thanking Hurricane Katrina, anointing President Bush as God’s choice, calling for the assassination of... more ›

Today Is The Day

Today Is The Day

Local news outlets are reporting that today is the day Jim Edgar will announce whether or not he will run for governor of Illinois against Rod Blagojevich in the 2006 race. If Edgar does run, he will be the bright spot of his party in Illinois, and will hope to ease recent Republican failings ranging from George Ryan to Alan Keyes. Recent polls find that Edgar could beat Blagojevich. Several Republican sources are reporting... more ›

If You See Something, Say Something, And Get $10,000

If You See Something, Say Something, And Get $10,000

Have you ever been around a bratty little kid that was so desperate for attention that he or she would say the most outlandish thing possible just to make people turn quickly and his or her direction and exclaim “Tell me I did not just hear those words come out of your mouth!” Yesterday that bratty child was the Cook County Republican Party when it announced a $10,000 reward for anyone who comes forward with... more ›

Maya Keyes: Liberal and Gay

Maya Keyes: Liberal and Gay

Maya Keyes, daughter of former Republican U.S. Senate candidate Alan Keyes, has publicly come out and declared that she is a "liberal." Oh, and that she's gay. At a rally for same-sex marriage rights in Maryland, 19-year-old Keyes urged support for gay youth who have been abandoned by their families and said that being gay in a conservative household was difficult: "Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well. That was making my life... more ›

Inauguration Hype In DC; Democrats Contemplate Canadian Citizenship

Inauguration Hype In DC; Democrats Contemplate Canadian Citizenship

There's a whole lotta hoopla starting in our nation's capital today. There's gala balls, parades, a big speech, and probably at least one or two beer bashes. Our compadres in Washington, DCist, have the whole coverage, but here's the meager Illinois angle: Basically, Chicago Democrats have all come home, or gone elsewhere. Chicagoist has spotted a number of Chicago Congressmen in Chicago this week, and we've heard stories of more than a few elected Illinois... more ›

The Hits Just Keep On Coming for Illinois GOP

It was a bad year for the Illinois GOP. Illinois went totally Blue for the presidency, Obama won, Alan Keyes was their Senate candidate, the Democrats kept hold of both houses of the state legislature, and Democrat Rod Blagojevich continued his popular reign as governor. Now it looks like the last Republican governor, George Ryan, is beginning a long, torturous journey to the federal pokey. Just this afternoon, federal judge Rebecca Pallmeyer decided to unseal... more ›

Alan Keyes, Don't Let the Door Hit You Where the Good Lord Split You

Alan Keyes, Don't Let the Door Hit You Where the Good Lord Split You

Alan Keyes! Alan Keyes! Oh, we'll never tire of writing about him. That laugh-a-minute homophobe is a website author's best friend—as long as he stays in the "news," the yuks pretty much write themselves. What's up this week with Mr. Illinois? He's moving! Woot woot. Let's recall…Keyes was crashing in an apartment in lovely Calumet City, and despite getting bitchslapped at the polls, he promised to stick around and help Illinois rebuild its Republican Party.... more ›

Keyes Blames The Media, Republicans

Keyes Blames The Media, Republicans

So.. Alan Keyes lost bigtime. . But, you know, it wasn't his fault. It was the media. The Media! And Republicans "in name only" that Keyes is blaming for his defeat. Keyes also said that he didn't call Barack Obama to congratulate him after his win because doing so would have been a "false gesture" because he believes that Obama's views on issues like abortion are wicked. more ›

Obama Wins Big

Obama Wins Big

OK, we're not dealing all that well with…y'know…so we're going to start the morning off right with a few digs at Alan Keyes. How do you know you've been watching too much local news coverage? When Alan Keyes shows up in your dream. Looks like Chicagoist and Blagojevich have something in common. Worst. Dream. Ever. more ›

Keyes, Obama--At Least It's Almost Over?

Keyes, Obama--At Least It's Almost Over?

So yeah, Barack Obama and Alan Keyes had another debate last night, and to the shock of absolutely no one they disagreed on almost everything. Weird weird times are upon us, friends. For example, Alan Keyes believes he's going to win next Tuesday, or as he puts it "[whether I'm going to win] is for God to know and for the obtuse media in Illinois to find out." BTW, that's our new comeback for everything.... more ›

Here's Hopin' He Flies Off The Handle

Here's Hopin' He Flies Off The Handle

It will be discourse not fisticuffs tonight, however, who knows with Alan "The Gentleman" Keyes (can't get enough of that picture). The second debate between Barack Obama and Alan Keyes, candidates for U.S. Senate in Illinois, is tonight from 7 to 8 p.m. on ABC 7. The debate is sponsored by both ABC 7 Chicago and the League of Women Voters of Illinois. The national League of Women Voters used to sponsor the presidential debates... more ›

Students across our fair nation took the pledge today, and according to a press release, Lisa Madigan, Arnie Duncan, and Miss Illinois Michelle LaGroue were on hand to celebrate with a rally. IL Gets a "D" in College Affordability

IL Gets a "D" in College Affordability

Making college more affordable has become a political issue in the U.S. Senate race. In an national report card released yesterday, Illinois got a D in affordability. Four years ago we got an A and like most issues, Barack Obama and Alan Keyes have very different solutions to the problem. more ›

Watch Your Back, Barack

Watch Your Back, Barack

Did you know there are two other people besides Barack Obama and Alan Keyes registered as candidates with the State Board of Elections for Illinois' U.S. Senate seat? Well there are and neither of them will win, but both of their names are eerily similar to those of two political celebrities. And that's hard-hitting political news--right? more ›

Renaissance of the Nerds

Renaissance of the Nerds

Its a good week to be a movie geek. Tickets went on sale at 9 AM today for Spamalot, the musical lovingly ripped off from one of the movies most-quoted by guys you went to high school with: Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Chicagoist covered the 411 on this back in July but its worth noting here that the opening of the box office featured an appearance by the Spammobile along with free cans... more ›

Alan Keyes, How Is Your Nickname Not AK-47?

Alan Keyes, How Is Your Nickname Not AK-47?

Were trying hard here at the Chicagoist offices to be respectful of lots of different political views, but there comes a time when we need to be upfront: Alan Keyes is totally fucking crazy. First, Alan Keyes flipped out at a reporter from the Trib; now, hes gone the extra mile by calling homosexuality selfish hedonism. Well played, Alan. Moderate conservatives eat that shit up. Yes, gay marriage is an important topic this year, and its worth debating on lots of levels, but were pretty sure that this is over the line. more ›

Vote For Keyes, Vote For Machine Guns

Vote For Keyes, Vote For Machine Guns

When Chicagoist started reading this article in the Sun Times on Alan Keyes thoughts on guns we couldn't even believe it was a real news story. Surely someone must have hacked the site and put this made up story there, right? It's so redic. Basically, Keyes said he thinks the constitution grants properly trained private individuals the right to own and carry machine guns. more ›

We Couldn't Make This Stuff Up

It's true: Chicagoist tends to display its political stripes now and then. But generally we try not to get too brazen, because frankly, politics is not our main interest. So we ask you... Nay! Beg you! Please do not judge us by our reporting on the daily nuttiness of Alan Keyes. When he tees it up, we just have to hit it. OK? more ›

Let The Games Begin

Keyes Moves To Illinois

Earlier this week Republican U.S. Senate Nominee Alan Keyes registered to vote at his new Illinois residence, a three bedroom house in south suburban Calumet City. It's a surprising choice for a Senate candidate. Not flashy at all, not close to the airports, and a pain to drive to the expressways every morning. It's a quiet neighborhood though, and probably fits the wallet of a guy that's also keeping a house in Maryland.... more ›
