Morning Box Score: Cubs Bats Lift Off in Houston

Morning Box Score: Cubs Bats Lift Off in Houston

The Cubs got off to a fast start in Houston last night, tagging Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez for five runs, capped by a three-run home run by Alfonso Soriano. That was enough for Carlos Zambrano to claim his tenth consecutive win dating back to last August in the Cubs' 9-5 win, but just barely. Zambrano gave up five runs in 5-2/3 innings, but his solo home run in the top of the sixth inning provided the margin to earn the victory. It was Zambrano's 22nd home run of his career, extending his Cubs record for home runs by a pitcher. more ›

Soriano Done For Year

It's not nearly as devastating as the Bears losing Urlacher in Week One - especially given the fact that the Cubs season is already done - but another Chicago athlete is done for his season. Alfonso Soriano will have surgery on his bum left knee tomorrow, meaning he's done for 2009. Soriano says rehab will take six weeks and he should be ready to go by Spring Training 2010. As always, just wait til next year... more ›

Cubs Stars Speak Out On 'Roiders

Cubs stars Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez are putting in their two cents on the recent round of steroid accusations (cough*A-Rod*cough) and both come down pretty hard on those who break the rules. Said Lee, ''There should be zero tolerance. We've had plenty of warnings. There's no excuses. You get caught now, there should be no sympathy. A year to me is even light.'' Meanwhile, his teammate Ramirez wants the 104 perpetrators exposed: ''Because [otherwise] everybody's going to be looking over your shoulder and saying, 'They might have done it,' or, 'They might have done it.' Just get it out and get it over with and move on." The Sun-Times has more comments from the two stars. And what of Alfosno "The $136 Million Dollar Man" Soriano, who became a Texas Ranger the year after A-Rod left the team? Said Fonz, ''I played in Texas for two years, and I didn't see anybody do it." more ›

Cubs Trade Cedeno For Bloated ERA

Cubs Trade Cedeno For Bloated ERA

The Chicago Cubs today continued to somehow make their bullpen worse via acquisitions when they traded infielder Ronny Cedeno and pitcher Garrett Olson to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for pitcher Aaron Heilman. Heilman is expected to compete for a spot in the starting rotation, which makes perfect sense given his career that boasts just one season with a winning record and three seasons (out of six) with an ERA over 5.00. Heilman had previously caused conniptions for New York Mets but had recently been shipped to Seattle in a blockbuster trade. As Al over at Bleed Cubbie Blue puts it, "Essentially, it boils down to Pie and Cedeno for Heilman and Henry Williamson." more ›

Cubs Pound Astros

Cubs Pound Astros

The Cubs beat the Houston Astros 11-4 this afternoon on the back of a huge third inning that saw Mark DeRosa blast a grand slam and a three-run shot from Alfonso Soriano. Embattled pitcher Jason Marquis got his first victory in almost a month and a half, giving up four runs over six and one-third inning and helping his own cause by knocking in a run. Sean Marshall and Jeff Samardzija did clean-up duty to secure the win. more ›

Soriano: Lose Some, Win Some

Soriano: Lose Some, Win Some

Soriano Sidelined

2008_04_soriano_injured.jpgYou know that weird little hop that Alfonso Soriano does every time he catches a ball? Well, the Cubs All Star outfielder injured his calf doing just that in the first inning of Tuesday night's game. Helped off the field by teammates, it looks like Soriano might be headed to the disabled list. more ›

And the Leadoff Batter du Jour is...

On Wednesday, Sweet Lou shook up his batting order, dropping last year's leadoff man Alfonso Soriano to the 2 hole and replacing him with Ryan Theriot at the top of the order. Part of the reasoning behind the move is that Piniella wants to get Soriano accustomed to not leading off, in hopes that management will pull off a blockbuster trade that would land leadoff specialist Brian Roberts from Baltimore in exchange for Ronny Cedeno, Sean Gallagher, Donnie Veal, and RHP prospect Jose Ceda (and potentially Jason Marquis and Baltimore OF Jay Payton). That sounds like a pretty lopsided deal, considering that the Cubs are offering three of their top pitching prospects, but it might represent one of the last pieces of the puzzle – and it would give Piniella a reason to stop his incessant tinkering with the lineup. more ›

First He Loses a Ball in the Sun, Then He Injures...

We figured that, with Mark Prior gone and Kerry Wood relegated to the bullpen, we'd be without the bizarre and frustrating injuries with which to taunt the Cubs fans in our lives. We should have known better. more ›

A Bleacher Bum Owner

A Bleacher Bum Owner

Fans can expect another busy offseason for the Cubs. And while last winter was spent courting the likes of Alfonso Soriano and Ted Lilly, this year's focus is going to be the ownership of the team. The Tribune Co., the current owners, has been dragging its feet on the sale, as it tries to maximize the overall price. While officially the desire is to close the sale during the fourth quarter, it's likely a deal... more ›

Wait Until Next Owners

Wait Until Next Owners

Well, that didn't take long, did it? The Arizona Diamondbacks finished off the Cubs 5-1 on Saturday, sweeping the NLDS ... and delaying a Cubs World Series at least another year. Those of us familiar with the Cubs knew what to expect from Game Three as a soon as Rich Hill's very first pitch to Chris Young ended up in the left-field bleachers. Hill was lucky to escape the inning down only 2-0, and he... more ›

Cubs Rally to Extend Lead Over Brewers

Cubs Rally to Extend Lead Over Brewers

It took a four-run seventh-inning rally, but the Cubs took the first game of a critical three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers by winning 5-3 at Wrigley Field on Tuesday. Jacque Jones, whom Cubs fans couldn't wait to unload earlier this season, drove in two of the runs with a key double during the seventh. With Alfonso Soriano on the DL and Derrek Lee's power missing, it's been Jones who has been the key to... more ›

Soriano Out a Month

Soriano Out a Month

Is that a goat we hear bleating? Because no sooner do the Cubs climb into a tie with the Brewers for the NL Central lead, they lose one of their top sluggers to injury. Alfonso Soriano landed on the disabled list on Monday, after tearing his right quadriceps in Sunday night's game against the New York Mets. Attempting to run from first to third on a Ryan Theriot single in the third inning, he came... more ›

All Star Rosters Announced

All Star Rosters Announced

Major League Baseball announced the rosters for the July 10 All-Star Game being held in San Francisco. Chicago baseball fans will see at least three of our local guys in the game. Given the White Sox sub par season, it's not surprising that they have only one All-Star this year -- the minimum representation any team gets. Closer Bobby Jenks will be the lone Sox player on the Americal League roster this year. Quite a... more ›

Sox Swept Away

Sox Swept Away

The Cubs held the White Sox to just two runs over three games, as they swept this weekend's series and ended up winning five of six overall in the crosstown showdown. Carlos Zambrano out dueled Mark Buehrle in Friday's game, limiting the Sox to one run and three hits as the Cubs won 5-1. The Sox bullpen let any chance for a comeback slip away by letting up three ninth inning runs. On Saturday, the... more ›

Soriano Strains Hamstring

Soriano Strains Hamstring

For the Cubs, every silver lining seems to have its cloud. While the offense and pitching came together and led the team to a 12-4 victory over the San Diego Padres Monday night, the victory may cost the Cubs the services of Alfonso Soriano for a while. Soriano left the game in the fifth inning after straining his hamstring, which could land the Cubs' 136-million-dollar man on the disabled list. Soriano injured his hamstring trying... more ›

2007 Baseball Preview

2007 Baseball Preview

2006's baseball season brought disappointment to both sides of Chicago. Coming off their 2005 World Series title, the White Sox won 90 games but missed the playoffs — in spite of a number of roster upgrades during the offseason. Did Kenny Williams tinker too much with the chemistry that won them a title in '05? Last year's team never seemed to find its rhythm. On the North Side, the Cubs climbed ever closer to that... more ›

A Break From Bears Coverage ...

With all the hype surrounding the Bears and their upcoming trip to the Super Bowl, we've been neglecting the other teams in town. Cubs Sign Soriano

Cubs Sign Soriano

For a company in financial trouble, the Cubs' parent company sure has been quick to open up the wallet this off season. Following last week's re-signing of Aramis Ramirez to a rich new deal, the Cubs made the biggest splash of baseball's free agency period by signing Alfonso Soriano to an 8-year, $136 million deal on Monday. Soriano batted .277 with 46 home runs, 95 RBIs, 41 doubles and 41 stolen bases -- becoming the... more ›

Deal or No Deal?

Deal or No Deal?

Baseball’s non-waiver trading deadline passed today at 3:00pm (CDT). The Cubs and Sox were both rumored to be players in possible deals, with the Cubs likely sellers of players and the Sox looking to add those missing pieces to help them right their ship and hopefully make a return trip to the World Series. Since the Cubs fell out of the running, there had been rumors that Greg Maddux and Todd Walker would get shipped... more ›
