Cubs, Sox Land Single Player Each On All-Star Rosters

While it was no shock to see only one Cub on this year's NL All-Star Roster, it's hard not to consider a certain White Sox player as snubbed. Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly and Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle were the lone representative from each team named to this year's All-Star teams. Missing from the AL squad? Jermaine Dye, whose 19/50/.291 line wasn't good enough. Dye isn't included on this year's Final Vote list, which gives fans the chance to vote in the final player to each roster.

The ball bounced Minnesota's way on Sunday, as the Timberwolves defeated the Bulls 109-108 in OT. Nearing the end of regulation and up by two, Joakim Noah's attempt at a defensive rebound went awry when the ball fell into the Bulls' own basket to tie the score for Minnesota. Chicago's Derrick Rose then missed an off-kilter shot on the next possession to force overtime. In the bonus period the ball was once again in Rose's hands with a chance to win. Rose drove the lane but couldn't find an outlet after picking up his dribble and was forced to take an ill-advised turnaround jumper. The ball rattled out and the Bulls couldn't get the tip to go as time expired. Ben Gordon led Chicago in scoring with 23 points, but it was Minnesota's Al Jefferson who won the day with 39.

  • It’s been a busy weekend for crime and violence, unfortunately. So busy that we’ve had a hard time keeping track of the shootings and stabbings. WBBM has a tally: two police-involved shootings and several fatalities.

Bulls GM John Paxson is having about as much luck these days as fellow Jerry Reinsdorf employee Kenny Williams. While the Sox have been unable to add a marquee center fielder to their roster, the Bulls keep keep coming up short when trying to land a player who can be the centerpiece of their franchise.

The NBA finalized the All-Star game rosters, announcing the reserves on Thursday. It should come as no surprise that the Bulls will not represented. Again.

On this -- officially the slowest sports day of the year -- we will take the opportunity to look back at the first half (or so) of the season for the Cubs and Sox. Fans of both teams entered the season with high expectations. Has either team lived up to those expectations? Cubs After spending a ton of money on free agents during the off season, the Cubs sit in second place in the NL...

We really didn't think the White Sox would be out of the playoff hunt so early -- certainly not before the All Star Break. But Chicagoist has finally realized that this team's not going anywhere this year and GM Kenny Williams is likely laundering that white flag just about now so it's ready when needed. Which could be any day now.

Injured prior to the All Star Break, Bulls forward Andres Nocioni finally returned to the court this weekend, scoring three points in 10 minutes against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday.

We know he's just a rookie. And we know that he only played one year of college ball, so he's really just hardly out of high school. But we still thought that Tyrus Thomas was more mature than he proved on Monday, when he told the Tribune repeatedly that he was participating in the Slam Dunk Contest during the NBA All Star Weekend festivities for the prize money.

Last week's Bulls-76ers game was evidently Allen Iverson's final game for Philly. The disgruntled guard has been inactive since Friday's game and will remain there according to team officials. Sixers Chairman Ed Snider said on Friday, "I think it's time for him to move on, and for us to move on and find out where everything stands."

Was it only a week ago that the Sox sat in third place in the AL Central, 10 games behind the Detroit Tigers? My, how things change quickly!

Should the White Sox again find themselves in the World Series this October -- and why shouldn't they? -- they now know they'll have home field advantage, on account of the American League's 3-2 victory in last night's All Star Game. It didn't look quite so promising for a while, however.

We did it again! For the second straight year, a member of the White Sox was voted by fans in MLB's Final Vote for the 32nd roster spot in the All Star Game. A.J. Pierzynski beat out 4 other worthy contenders for the honor, just as Scott Podsednik did last year. Once again, the White Sox marketing staff jumped into action to promote their candidate, coming up with their "Punch A.J." campaign. Playing off his...

So is Dusty Baker on the hot seat or not? Recently, comments from Cubs GM Jim Hendry made it sounds like the Cubs skipper might not be returning from the All Star Break.

Major League Baseball announced the rosters for next week's All Star Game yesterday, and 6 members of the White Sox were selected, along with one Cub -- Carlos Zambrano.

Man, we hate it when, on rare occasions, we actually agree with Jay Mariotti. But he's right about the Cubs -- they're in big trouble this year. With the season starting in just a few days and their two supposed studs on the DL (what's this, the third straight year?) the Cubs don't look like legitimate playoff contenders. All spring, Cubs management continued to claim that there was nothing wrong with Kerry Wood and Mark...

After Wired ran a story documenting the GoogleCenter of the United States a bunch of ists jumped on the opportunity to figure out their own middle. Gothamist, Chicagoist, Bostonist and Seattlest all zoomed in on their creamy GoogleCenters. A crack cartography team is hard at work determining the GoogleCenter of the Ist-a-verse as you read this... Austinist read a book about Olympian Bode Miller and liked it. They also took a few pictures of the...

The Bulls embark on the second half of their season tonight -- well, kind of. It's their first game following the All Star Break, but only 30 games remain in the regular season. With a 23-29 record at the break, the Bulls are currently out of the playoffs picture. However, they're only 2 games behind the 76ers for the 8th seed so a playoff berth isn't impossible. But can their current roster play better over...

Before the start of the NBA season, Chicagoist actually thought the Bulls would be comparable to last year's surprising 47-35 team. Boy were we wrong! Whereas last year's team regularly scraped and clawed to overcome early defecits and win games they had no business winning, this year's team has been following the opposite script. Monday night's loss to the Utah Jazz saw the Bulls give away the game not once, but twice. They jumped out...

While the Cubs have suffered nearly a century of team futility, that doesn't mean they haven't had some of the best players of all time on the team over the years. Last year, we saw Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg elected to the Hall of Fame. This year's lone selection is Bruce Sutter, yet another former Cub. He was voted in by the BBWAA, receiving votes from 76.9% of the voters (75% req. for entry)....

The off season remains a busy period for Chicago's two baseball teams as they continue to lock in their rosters for 2006 and beyond. The Cubs officially said goodbye this week to Nomar Garciaparra, who agreed to a 1-year deal with the L.A. Dodgers. With the Dodgers, Nomar will move over to first base. Nomar's injury-plagued season and a half were nothing like Cubs fans expected from the former All Star shortstop. He played just...

Overshadowed by MJ during most of his tenure with the Bulls, Scottie Pippen nonetheless established himself as one of the greats of the NBA. During his career, he was a 7-time All Star and 8-time All Defensive First Team player. He averaged almost 20 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists per game while with the Bulls, winning 6 NBA titles along the way. All these resulted in his inclusion on the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players of All-Time list announced in 1996.

In convincing fashion, the 2005 Sox demonstrated that they are clearly the best team in the American League, defeating the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 5 games. After dropping Game 1 to the Angels and squeaking by in the controversial Game 2, the Sox headed out to Anaheim and dominated the Angels, winning all three games to clinch the AL Pennant.

Really, the game was over by the end of the first inning as the White Sox jumped all over Matt Clement for 5 runs, including three on a home run by A.J. Pierzynski. Paul Konerko knocked one out in the third and Juan Uribe drove in two more with a long ball in the bottom of the 4th to counter Boston's two in the top of the frame. Scott Podsednik hit his first home run in a Sox uniform in the 6th inning to drive in 3 of the 4 runs they added that inning. Pierzynski homered again in the 8th and Willie Harris drove in yet another insurance run.

With the fears of an epic choke bubbling to the forefront of most White Sox fans minds lately, manager Ozzie Guillen pulled no punches when he blasted his team following yesterday's loss,

Chicagoist remembers being at a Sox game a couple years ago and seeing an old guy in a wheel chair entertaining a crowd while flirting with women a third his age. When we asked an usher who that was, we were told he was former Negro Leagues star Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe -- who died today at 103. Born in Mobile, Alabama, Radcliffe lived in Chicago much of his life. He spent his later years living in a retirement home near U.S. Cellular Field and regularly attended games at the park. In recent years it had become tradition for him to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at White Sox games on his July 7th birthday.

Chicagoist wonders where Ivan DeJesus spent this past weekend... because we know that the guy for whom he ws traded in 1982 spent the weekend being inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame. That infamous trade brought a young Ryne Sandberg to the Cubs at the very start of his career. By the end of that career, Sandberg was the face of the Cubs for more than a decade -- covering second base from 1982 until 1997. In that span, he dominated the second base position, winning the MVP Award in 1984, 9 gold gloves, and making 10 All Star Teams while setting the career record for home runs among second basemen. He also lead the Cubs to the playoffs for the first time since their 1945 World Series appearance. The Hall of Fame has an extended recap of Ryno's career, while the Trib devoted an entire special section to the event.

As Fox repeatedly reminded us last night, "This time, it still counts." As in the winning league's representative in the World Series gets home field advantage. So it's a good thing for the White Sox that the AL won the All Star Game 7-5 last night.

Chicagoist asked you to do our city proud by voting early and often for MLB's Final Vote to select the last players on the All Star game rosters, and you didn't disappoint!
