Psst! Over Here! Secret Saturday Plans!

Alright, folks, I have to make this quick before my editors get back from their coffee run. Here's the deal: By now you probably know about our fifth anniversary party this Saturday night at The Whistler. I want to tell you about a great concert going on that night, but if my editors find out I plugged something other than our party, they'll make Gitmo look like a Mancow stunt. They are not fucking around on this one. more ›

Local Bars Make Food & Wine Top 100 List

Local Bars Make Food & Wine Top 100 List

Food & Wine magazine released its "Cocktails 2009" guide this week. Listed in the guide's contents are the top 100 bars in America. Chicago charted five bars on that list, which will only reinforce the belief of some that Our Town's moment in the culinary zeitgeist is over. more ›

One Last Reminder!

One Last Reminder!

It's our 3rd Anniversary Party at Subterranean tonight! We are very, VERY excited to finally be past our twos! We are even more excited that this event is open to a broad swathe of our readers since it's open to everyone 18 and over. (And for those of you over 21, we're sure you're excited about the $2.50 pints of Goose Island available all night long.) We've spent the past few days talking to and... more ›

Sweetish Carves Their Own Niche.

Sweetish Carves Their Own Niche.

A couple years ago we came across a local band named Wonderful Smith's promo pack. We pulled out the photo and immediately cringed, worrying that the group was going to be another slightly granola frat-friendly party band (not that there's anything intrinsically wrong with that, it's just not our thing). However, if there's one thing we do pride ourselves upon, it's that we give EVERYTHING that crosses our desk a listen. If someone can take the time to send us our music, the least we can do is give it an honest listen. more ›

One! More! Week!

One! More! Week!

That's right, the Chicagoist 3rd Anniversary Party is only one week away! We already know you're planning on attending our 18 and over show at Subterranean next Thursday, right? Who would want to miss live sets from Milk At Midnight, Sweetish, and We Make Thunder? Who wouldn't want to get their dance on to the live debut of The Hood Internet DJs? And who wouldn't want to enjoy the beer special we've lined up with... more ›

That Reeling Feeling

That Reeling Feeling

We knocked ourself out at the Chicago International Film Festival and RESFEST|10, and we see no reason to end our film-addicted ways. So already we've been perusing the schedule for Reeling, the 25th Chicago Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. It's the second-oldest festival of its kind in North America, and when they say they're proud of the diversity of their offferings you know they aren't kidding -- we spied romantic comedies, avant-garde shorts, provactive dramas... more ›

Actually, the Second Time's the Charm

Actually, the Second Time's the Charm

As we put the wraps on May (can it stop raining now?), we want to remind you how we’re beginning the month of June: with our summer kickoff event, the Chicagoist 2nd Anniversary Party! more ›

Three-Buck Drunk

Three-Buck Drunk

Ahhhh. The joys of summer. Hot weather, music festivals, swimming pools and ... Bell's Oberon. Nothing says "the time of the year when you sweat your ass off" quite like it. Unless of course you equate the summer months with vodka lemonades, in which case, Chicagoist has got you covered. To celebrate our second anniversary, we're not only bringing you some kick-ass music - and cake! Let us not forget cake! - but also a... more ›

Is Calling It "The Deuce" Too Over the Top?

Is Calling It "The Deuce" Too Over the Top?

Though it’s still rainy and cool outside, our minds are on the summer and the Chicagoist 2nd Anniversary Party, our official kickoff to summer at the Pontiac Café with Suffrajett and DJs Coco Le Roc and Tankboy. We're planning on it being a knock-down, drag-out time. We'd make an announcement about some of the goodies we’ve got planned, but the truth is we've been spending way too much time trying to be posthumously added to... more ›

Chicagoist Enters Terrible Twos, Rocks Your Ass

Chicagoist Enters Terrible Twos, Rocks Your Ass

Next week, Chicagoist officially turns two years old so we’re throwing ourselves a party with cake, booze, and some down-and-dirty rock and roll. At 9 p.m. on Thursday June 8th, Chicagoist will host its 2nd Anniversary Party with special guest Suffrajett at the Pontiac Café (1531 N. Damen). A Chicagoist fave, Suffrajett combines hard rocking, fuzzed-out guitars with funky R&B grooves and a live show that will leave you sweaty and happy. But that’s not... more ›

A Year in the Life

A Year in the Life

525,600 minutes, 525,600 minutes, how do you measure, measure a year? In daylights? In sunsets? In midnights? In cups of coffee? In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife? Pardon our departure into lame, but catchy show-tunes, but we couldn't get it out of our head when we heard that it was Powell’s Bookstore's one year anniversary of their reading series. To celebrate, tomorrow night they will host John Tipton, founder and director of the... more ›

An In-Store To Die For

An In-Store To Die For

We always enjoy an in-store performance by a band. We’re always impressed by an in-store performance by a band in a store other than a record store. We’re actively salivating at the announcement of an in-store performance by Queens Of The Stone Age at the soon-to-be-vacated Belmont Army Surplus store tonight. more ›
